4 Dimensional Photography

2021, Thore Flynn Hadré

The three dimensions of space depict the world to us as we know it. Our live always took place in 3-D and we are accustomed to its looks. Our imagination reaches its limits when we try to imagine higher dimensions of both time and space. But if the fourth dimension can be described as adding time to the three dimensions of space, we can try to add time into the process of creating images. For example, a double exposure photogrpah plays with the element of time, as it captures two different moments in a single photo. For this project I tried to include time as a spatial dimension in the process of creating double exposures. Asking the question, what if the fourth dimension would allow us to see an object from multiple sides at the same time. As you do not need to rotate it in three dimensions, you can just rotate it in time and see it all at once, similarly to what a slitscan image would look like.

In other words, I tried to take photos that through double exposure show multiple locations or perspectives in a single shot. For that I modded my point and shoot film camera, which usually doesn’t allow for double exposures or underexposures that can be exposed twice. I inserted a papercut mask inbetween the film and the lens that covers half of the film. Then I shot a complete roll of film, insreted another mask that covers the other side of the film and reshot the film again with different motives.
